This spring, a bittersweet season descended upon us, casting a somber shadow over our lives. Our dear friend, Suellen, a woman of extraordinary spirit and unwavering humor, was nearing the end of her long battle with scleroderma. A disease that had silently crept into her life over two decades ago, gradually robbing her of her physical capabilities but never her indomitable spirit.
Despite the challenges, Suellen has always approached life with a contagious optimism. She’s the kind of person who could find humor in the most trying situations. For one, her invite went something along the lines of “Catch up with me before I pop the clog.” Classic Suellen indeed.
But as the disease progressed, the reality of her mortality became increasingly apparent. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, Suellen chose to embrace life with renewed vigor. She organized lunches, family gatherings, and friend get-togethers, turning her impending farewell into a celebration of life.
Me and my girlfriends had the honor of organizing a “Celebration of Life” lunch for our high school besties. It was a whirlwind of emotions, a rollercoaster ride of laughter, tears, and cherished memories. Friends traveled from far and wide, converging on Kylie Loch and Sarah’s amazing coffee shop, Little Genovese. The air was filled with the aroma of delicious food, the warmth of friendship, and the bittersweet knowledge that time was slipping away.
As we sat around the table, sharing stories and laughter, I couldn’t help but admire Suellen’s resilience. She was the life of the party, cracking jokes and making everyone feel loved and supported. It was a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope and humor can prevail.
Suellen’s choice to face her mortality with such grace and dignity has inspired me to live my own life more fully. It has taught me the importance of cherishing every moment, of expressing love freely, and of finding joy in the simple things.
