Before They Become Too Cool for Cuddles: Photographing Your Growing Kids | Brisbane Family Photographer

There comes a stage in every parent’s life when the cuddles start to become… negotiated.

You reach for a hug and get an eye roll.

You ask for a photo and hear, “Do we have to?”

And that little person who once couldn’t get enough of being carried suddenly has places to be, opinions to share, and apparently far more important things to do than cuddle Mum or Dad.

If you’re raising tweens or older children, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

But here’s the thing.

They’re still your babies.

Even if they don’t want you to say that in public.

And this stage of childhood is every bit as worth photographing as the years that came before it.

The Years Between Childhood and Growing Up

When children are little, their changes are obvious.

New shoes every few months.

Growing out of their clothes.

First teeth, first words, first steps.

But as they get older, the changes become a little more subtle.

Their personalities are developing. They’re discovering their interests, figuring out what they like, and becoming increasingly independent.

The tween years are such a fascinating in-between stage. They’re not little children anymore, but they’re not grown either.

And one day, you’ll look back at photographs from this time and realise just how quickly it passed.

That’s why family photography in Brisbane shouldn’t stop simply because your children aren’t tiny anymore.

In fact, these years might be some of the most important to capture.

Yes, They Might Be a Little Awkward

Let’s be honest.

Not every tween or teenager is going to arrive at a family photoshoot thinking it’s the best idea you’ve ever had.

There might be some reluctant smiles.

A little awkwardness.

Possibly an “Are we done yet?” somewhere along the way.

And that’s perfectly okay.

They don’t need to pose perfectly or suddenly become enthusiastic models.

The goal isn’t to make them look like someone they’re not.

It’s to capture who they are right now.

The cheeky grin.

The serious expression.

The way they’ve suddenly shot up and are now taller than Mum.

The little mannerisms that are uniquely theirs.

The moments when they forget the camera is there.

Those are the photographs you’ll treasure.

Before the Cuddles Become Even Rarer

There is something particularly precious about photographs of older children still allowing themselves to be close to their parents.

An arm around Dad’s shoulder.

A head resting against Mum.

A quick cuddle before they pull away and pretend they’re embarrassed.

A genuine laugh between them.

As children grow older, these moments can become less frequent. Not because the love disappears, but because they’re becoming their own person.

And that’s exactly why it’s worth capturing them while they’re still happening.

One day, you might look at a photograph of your nearly-grown child leaning into you and realise just how much that simple moment meant.

Photograph Their Personality, Not Just Their Face

Great children’s photography isn’t simply about documenting what your child looks like at a particular age.

It’s about remembering who they were.

What made them laugh.

The interests they were obsessed with.

The way they interacted with their siblings.

Their relationship with Mum and Dad.

The little quirks you knew would probably change as they grew.

As a Brisbane Family Photographer, I love capturing these details because they tell a much bigger story.

There will never be another version of your child exactly like this one.

Not this height.

Not this laugh.

Not these interests.

Not this particular relationship with you.

A photograph gives you a way to remember it.

Family Photos Don’t Have to Feel Staged

Older children often respond beautifully when they’re given the freedom to simply interact rather than being asked to stand still and smile.

A walk together.

A conversation.

Some sibling teasing.

A cuddle.

A moment between Mum and daughter.

Dad and son.

The whole family laughing together.

These little interactions allow personalities to come through naturally, creating photographs that feel like your family rather than a collection of perfectly posed smiles.

And that’s what we want from family photography.

Not perfection.

Connection.

One Day, You’ll Miss This Version of Them

Right now, you’re probably thinking about what’s next.

The next school year.

The next birthday.

The next activity.

The next milestone.

But one day, you’ll look back and realise these ordinary years were actually incredibly special.

You’ll miss their voices filling the house.

You’ll miss the sound of them coming through the front door.

You’ll miss their little habits and the things they were obsessed with.

You might even miss hearing, “Mum, don’t embarrass me.”

So while they’re still willing to stand beside you for a photograph, take the opportunity.

Even if they pretend they don’t want to.

Because They’re Still Your Family

Family photography doesn’t stop being important when children stop being little.

If anything, it becomes more meaningful.

You’re capturing the transition between childhood and adulthood. You’re documenting the people they’re becoming while preserving the family dynamic you’ve built together.

As a Brisbane Family Photographer, I believe every stage deserves to be remembered.

The newborn days.

The chaotic toddler years.

The school years.

The tween years.

The teenage years.

Because before they become too cool for cuddles, these are the years you’ll want to hold onto.

So let them roll their eyes.

Let them laugh.

Let them be themselves.

And most importantly, get in the frame with them.

Because one day, that reluctant little smile might just be the photograph you treasure most.
